Bluebell season is fast approaching, and the first few flowers are beginning to show their colour. If you’re planning on heading out to take some photos in the bluebells this spring then read on for some bluebell photography tips. 

If you are going to take photos in the bluebells remember bluebells are very sensitive to being trodden on. Make sure you stay on the paths and avoid damaging the flowers and help maintain the bluebells for years to come. 

VARY YOUR SHOOTING ANGLE

Try shooting from high to get the clearest view of the bluebell carpet, or shooting from ground level and looking up to make a smaller number of bluebells more dominant in the image.  

CONSIDER YOUR COMPOSITION

Try and seek out areas of bluebells where there is less clutter on the woodland floor, such as fallen branches. Think about using techniques such as leading lines to create interest in your images. You can vary your focal length to get a range of different images, a longer focal length will help create the carpet of bluebells effect. Remember to increase your shutter speed (or use a tripod) so that you don’t get camera movement. 

WATCH YOUR HISTOGRAM

If your camera has a histogram, keep an eye on it to check that none of the shadows or highlights are clipped. 

SUNNY DAY?

Ideally you want to be taking photographs early in the morning. At this time the light is soft and golden. If the sun is strong try positioning the sun behind a tree to avoid it causing areas that are too light in your photos. You might even be able to capture some sun rays by doing this.
